DISCOUNTING

     Discounting is the refusal to acknowledge some aspect of a given stimulus. It is a type of selective perception that can be very damaging to the quality of our lives and of our relationships. The table below is taken from Transactional Analysis by Stan Wollams and Michael Brown.(1)

1.) Severity of effect is read from upper left (most severe) to lower right (least severe), diagonally.

2.) Discount in any mode presupposes discounting in all modes below it.

3.) Diagonal arrows connect interrelated levels of discounting.

4.) Higher levels must be confronted and resolved first.
